There are 3 main forms of music videos: 1) Performance 2) Narrative 3) Conceptual  In performance music videos you ill see a solo artist or the band performing to the camera. There is no proper story-line but its more like a live performance recorded.For example 'fix you - coldplay' In narrative music videos it contains a story-line or a visual story that closely reflects the lyrical content of the song with little to no interaction of the singer with the audience. whereas, conceptual music videos are based on a single idea or concept and are usually unusual and obscure such as unusual images and narratives, or shots/story-line having no connection with the lyrics, or sometimes few lip-syncing or sometimes no lip-sync. Basically this type is mixture of both types above with some  q ualities of its own.

So semiotics do play an important role in the music videos because as there are no dialouges so, the  w hole story line is sho w n through cinematics and camera  w ork. So then semiotics come in  w hich help to deliver the narrative to the audience easily.  Semiotics basically is study of the symbols and signs that portray a basic as  w ell as a deeper meaning. So in the music video there are gonna be such symbols and signs  w hich are linked and have meaning  w hich needs to be understood by audience itself.
